Users Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using these treatments should be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts believe the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

People who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly starving," described an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
